For the first time in over thirty years, Safenet Services has been unable to provide emergency shelter services for victims of domestic and sexual violence. On June 6th, Safenet Services’ 15,800 square foot facility experienced a flood from a major sewage line back up, contaminating over 90% of the building and much of the content. Safenet Services, a local nonprofit organization serving those impacted by domestic violence in both Rogers and Mayes Counties, has been unable to shelter adults and children fleeing the threat of homicide for the past six months.
The Donald W. Reynolds Family Safety Center opened in Claremore in 2012, tripling Safenet’s shelter capacity, adding administrative offices and providing outreach service capacity for clients. Although Safenet has been able to temporarily relocate most services to a small office across from the Rogers County Courthouse, the agency is still without an emergency shelter for those at risk of domestic violence homicide. At their temporary office, Safenet continues to provide a 24/7 crisis hotline, case management, counseling, family advocacy, supervised visitation, and a batterer intervention program.
Restoration services began the morning of the flood. To ensure the highest standards of safety for future guests and staff, extensive removal, treatment and bacterial testing processes have been performed. This endeavor is projected to cost roughly $500,000, not accounting for the replacement of necessary furniture, supplies and equipment needed for both outreach services and the emergency shelter. Though Safenet has already secured several sources of funding for this project, they are now turning to the community to help bridge a $270,000 gap.
In anticipation of their return in late January 2026, Safenet Services has launched their Hope Restored Campaign to address this significant loss. In the new year, Safenet will continue to provide life-saving shelter for more than 200 adults and children each year, a critical service when Oklahoma continues to rank second in the nation for women murdered by men (Domestic Violence Fatality Review Board 2024).
